Forgive me my such sins as would bring down calamity. For it is the duty of all possessing the knowledge to pass it on, thus supplications were recorded for annual public occasions and inward prayer alike. Nor has such been reported — thanks to Your bounty — concerning You, O All-generous!
And calls to You with the tongue of those who profess Your Unity. Or how should its flames burn him, while You hear his voice and see his place? A du’a may address God in any circumstance to which one may be afflicted. How many of my loathsome acts hast Thou screened from public gaze How many of my grievous afflictions distresses hast Thou reduced in severity And how many of my stumblings hast Thou protected, how many of my detestable acts has Thou averted, and how many of my undeserving praises hast Thou spread abroad!

So he deluded me through my soul’s caprice and therein destiny favoured him. And You— majestic is Your eulogy— said at the beginning and wernt gracious through kindness as a favour. O Allah forgive kumwil for those sins which cut down the hopes! O He whose Name is a remedy, And whose remembrance is a cure, And whose obedience is wealth!

Ali ibn Abi Talib. Widely considered a request for one’s own or a community’s well being, a du’a serves as a direct spiritual connection with God. According to Allama EnglixhKumayl ibn Ziyada confidante of Ali ibn Abi Talib had attended an assembly in the Mosque at Basra which was addressed by Imam Ali in the course of which the night of the 15th of Sha’aban a month was mentioned.
My Lord, have mercy upon the weakness of my body, the thinness of my skin and the frailty of my bones. For You hast decreed Your worship for Your servants And commanded them to supplicate You And assured them that they would be answered. Far be it from You! The Supplication of Kumayl. Rather We hurl the truth against falsehood, and it crushes its head O Allah, my tribulation is tremendous, And my bad state is excessive, And my fetters have tied me down, And my far-fetched hopes have held me back from my gain And this world with its delusions, my own soul with its offences and my delay have deceived me.
For it is a tribulation whose period is long, whose station endures and whose sufferers are given no respite. And You know my weakness before a little of this world’s tribulations and punishments.
Or how should its keepers torture him while he calls out to You, O Lord? And that You will place those who stubbornly resist therein forever. Far be it from You! Owner of my bondage! And over tongues voicing sincerely the profession of Your Unity and giving thanks to You in praise. Muhammad Ali Fatimah Hasan Hussein. So I declare with certainty that were it not for what You have decreed concerning the chastisement of Your deniers.
I find no place to flee from what has occurred through me, Nor any place of escape to which I may turn in my affairs, Other than Your acceptance of my excuse and Your entering me into the compass of Your mercy. O He, whose pleasure is quickly achieved! O Allah, forgive me for those sins which draw down adversities!
Even though it is a tribulation and ordeal whose stay is short, whose subsistence is but little and, whose period is but fleeting.
My God and my Protector! How many burdensome tribulations You hast abolished! So I ask You by the power You hast apportioned And by the decision which You hast determined and imposed and through which You hast overcome him toward whom it has been put into effect, That You forgivest me in this night and at this hour Every offence I have committed, And every sin I have performed, And every ugly thing I have concealed And every folly I have enacted Whether I have hidden or announced it, Or I have concealed it or manifested it And every evil act which You hast commanded the Noble Writers to record, Those whom You hast appointed to watch over what appears from me And whom You hast made, along with my bodily members, witness against me.
Through the negation of personal desires and attributes, a Muslim may strengthen ones relationship with God through the guidance and imitation of a trained companion of God.
No such opinion is held of You! Whosoever intendeth evil against me, let ill befall on him and frustrate him who plots against me and assign for me a place in Thy presence with the best of Thy bondsmen and nearer abode to Thee, for verily that position cannot be attained except through Thy grace and treat me benevolently, and through Thy greatness extend. Or how can I dwell in the Fire while my hope is Your pardon?
Dua-e-Kumayl with English Translation – دُعَاء كُميل
O’ Thou who knoweth my destitution and starvation, o’ my Lord! Pearl of Wisdom No sooner does falsehood stand against the truth than the truth defeats the falsehood, for that englissh the purport of His verse: Forgive every sin that I have committed and every error that I have erred O Allah! Bestow upon me for the sake of Your having given rise [to me] with generosity and Your previous goodness to me! So how can I endure the tribulations of the next world and the great ordeals that occur within it?
I beseech Thee by Thy mercy which encompasses all things And by Thy power by which Thou overcometh all things and submit to it all things and humble before it all things And by Thy might by which Thou hast conquered all things And by Thy majesty against which nothing can stand up.
