Writing a novel denies her some of the liberties she’s grown used to taking. She’s white; he’s a Nigerian exchange student. The phrase ‘novel-in-verse’ tends to make my heart sink, so I began reading with some reluctance.
In handling this complex genealogy the narrative travels across time and space, transcending the confines of suburban life. I can jump from one period to another, and not have to fill in the intervening gaps, except a couple of lines.
